First Post

At last took up the task of designing my blogspot. Though I had created this one long back, I could not somehow go any further. Should I call it a time constraint? Well, that is safer ;).

Just stepped into my new corner. Decorated with fonts, colours and layouts to make it somewhat liveable (at least for myself). Now I have to fill it with all the curio stuff strewn around. Well, you may find this place empty for some more time to come, till I get time to sit and arrange, that is.

While making this blog, I was wondering if I should make it in Kannada or English. On a second thought I realized that the question itself was meaningless. When I think in both Kannada & Engilsh, live in both and even beyond, and when I have friends of both languages, and more over when it is my own corner where I do not need to pose, why bother about the language. I shall go on posting as it comes.

Well, I think this much is enough for today. Need a break from this much of Housekeeping work ;) Catch you later

Bye

Hi Manju, I enjoyed reading your poems and blogs. One observation- I dare not say comment:), is that your expression of emotions get a free flow when writing your own poems and the translations (per definition) have a good metrical structure, but the emotions are bounded by the original. Personally, I would consider your own works as giving more satisfaction that what the translated stuff gives
Nice reading your thoughts, would want to meet you once, lets see when the time comes !!

Samir,

Thanks for your comment (I do dare call it as one ;) I'd love to reply your observations.

Translations (must) reflect more of the poet's views/stand points/ideas/expressions, not those of the translators. Adhearing to the original as far as possible in its form, content and substance is the keyword. Suppose you have a better way of expressing the same thing which the poet had expressed otherwise, then you will have to fight your own temptation to do so. Thus, translation is a more difficult task than writing ones own poetry, in that, in the former the translator is not free wheras in the latter, the poet is free. Throughout the effort, a translator strives to catch hold of the finer strains of the rhyme and rhythm in the original work.

A translation can fail if the translator can not go with the poet in ALL (or most of the) respects, either due to his better qualities, or lesser qualities. I definitely know I have somewhat not passed in my translations for the second reason ;), but I enjoyed the work the same way I enjoyed the poem itself.

By the way, these are very old translations which I am posting now in the blog. Thanks for your review, I liked it.
